WICKED'18 Volunteer FAQ

Please read through both pages of the rules; the Play Space Rules on this page, the Event Rules, the Pool Rules, and the Photography Rules.

By purchasing a ticket you are agreeing to these Rules.

After reading these rules, if you have further questions, please e-mail the event coordinators. If you have questions about the Rules during the event, please see a Coordinator, Moderator, Play Space Monitor or any AIS Staff Member.

The AIS Convention staff often get questions about "how to volunteer" at the events, and some of these questions are fairly common. Hopefully, this list of volunteer topics will provide you with some useful information... we couldn't do this event without our volunteers, and we hope you find this FAQ list helpful!

Important: Want to work registration?
To help our registration staff out and make things go as smoothly as possible on Friday, I'm looking for a few volunteers to work earlier in the afternoon. Previously, our volunteer slots opened at 5:00PM for this shift. If you would be able to be at the hotel no later than 3:00PM on Friday and would be interested in working, please contact me!

Who can volunteer?
The Adventures in Sexuality Team loves our WICKED volunteers, and if you're attending the event, you can volunteer to be a part of the event itself!

How do I sign up to volunteer?
Currently, our volunteer positions include registration, door monitoring, and play space monitoring. When you register for the event, you are given the option to sign up as a volunteer at that time.

I already bought my ticket... can I still volunteer?
If you've already registered and didn't mark yourself as a volunteer but would like to do a volunteer shift, please feel free to contact the event Volunteer Coordinators! The more the merrier, and they would be happy to add you to the volunteer roster!!

I want to volunteer, but I want to make sure I'm scheduled at the same time as my friend/partner/fuck-toy/etc. OR I can only work during this specific time.
Great! The volunteer organizers try their best to keep people together when working volunteer shifts. Please contact the Volunteer Coordinators directly with your requests! They do try their best to honor such requests, however it usually happens on a first-come-first-serve basis.
(back to question list)

If I volunteer; what is the time commitment?
For our registration & door monitoring positions, the shifts last two hours. The play space monitor shifts only last one hour. We need registration & door monitors during the entire event, so it's a possibility that your shift will be scheduled during the evening or during classes. Play space monitors will only be scheduled when the play space is open.
(back to question list)

Can you give me a brief description of what I'll be doing as a volunteer?
Registration volunteers will work closely with our registration staff to assist in getting all event attendees through our check in process as smoothly as possible! You might be ensuring our waivers are properly filled out, taking care of the event wrist bands, and handing out name badges.

Our door monitors are placed at specific areas of the event space, and their main duty is to check our attendees for name badges AND wrist bands. If you see someone without one or both items, please kindly request that they wait there with you while you radio a member of staff. Even if they've forgotten their name badge/wristband in their room, an event staff member will escort them back to vanilla space so they can retrieve their AIS event badge/wristband. This is an integral part of keeping all of us safe!

Play Space Monitors are responsible for being the extended eyes & ears of the event staff. We can't be everywhere at once, and when things get hopping in the dungeon, we need all the help we can get! Your main goal is to ensure all event rules are being adhered to when people are playing. If there is an violation of the rules or you're unsure of something, you should contact an event staff member ASAP!

I'm new, I don't know if I have enough experience to be a play space monitor?
If you want to be a play space monitor, we encourage you to attend the "Play Space Monitor Meeting", usually an hour prior to the friday night opening remarks. Even new people can make awesome Play Space Monitors! It's also a great way to really familiarize yourself with the event rules.
We do not want our PSMs to actually stop any scene in progress, but we do want to know about it! If you ever see something where you even think it might be a violation of the rules, notify an event staff member or the manager on duty immediately, and we will handle the situation!
Additionally, we encourage all PSMs to attend the Friday night PSM Orientation, hosted by one of our long time staff members. They will happily go over all the rules and expectations for our PSMs!
(back to question list)

When will the volunteer schedule be released?
The volunteer schedule is released typically two weeks prior to the event itself. Selected volunteers will receive the volunteer schedule in the email that was used when they registered for the event. Please keep an eye out on the FetLife group as well - we will post a notice when we've sent out the schedule.

Two hours? What if i get bored?
A question we get is "Can I read my book/work on crafts/do something to keep me entertained while I'm working as a door monitor?". And ya know.... sitting at the door, bored out of your mind, is a thing! So, at this time, the answer to this question is a tentative yes. While we very much want everyone to enjoy their time at the event and sitting in one spot can be boring, we're also relying on you to help us keep the event and attendees safe! Unfortunately, electronic devices are not permitted which means NO iPads, no smart phones, etc., in accordance with our 'no electronic devices' policy.
If you are distracted from checking all wrist bands, badges, or not informing us if something goes wrong, we will ask you to put away whatever is distracting you. (In other words, pay attention to what's going on around you!)
(back to question list)

I may have a time conflict with my volunteer shift, what should I do?
If you are acting as a demo-volunteer for a class or will not be at the event until a certain time, please notify the Volunteer Coordinator as soon as possible. Once the volunteer schedule is sent out, it's a little more difficult to make changes.
(back to question list)

My friend and I are switching volunteer shifts... cool?
No problem; just be please be sure to notify the event volunteer coordinators of the change, otherwise you and/or your friend may not get credit for showing up to your shifts!!
(back to question list)

I signed up as a door monitor, but I didn't receive a copy of the volunteer schedule?
One of two things may have happened: either your spam filter swallowed up our email, or you weren't scheduled. Please contact the event Volunteer Coordinator to find out which it is! The event organizers get so many door monitor volunteers, that sometimes not everyone can be scheduled! If you haven't been scheduled at a door monitor position, there are still volunteer options for you, though! We always need more play space monitor volunteers. Additionally, it's handy if the volunteer organizers have a list of names of people on hand who are interested in volunteering, just in case someone doesn't show up to their shift!
(back to question list)

I can't find the answer to my question on this list...Help!
No worries! We can answer your questions about the event or get you an answer if we don't know. If you can't find the answer, chances are, other attendees to the event may also want that answer, but might be too shy to ask the question. The answer may be available on the FetLife group page for the FetLife WICKED2018 Attendees Group, or might have been asked in the past and we left the answer off the list. Send your question to the Volunteer Coordinator and/or the AIS staff and we'll do our best to find that answer.

Just who is this Volunteer Coordinator?
In case you don't know who the heck I am and what I have do with volunteering, let me introduce myself! I am MsDemanda, and I am the Volunteer Coordinator for this event! Any questions/comments/concerns you have, please feel free to contact me directly with any volunteer related questions! I'm happy to help the best I can! You can contact me through my FetLife Profile, or you can send me an email to: aisvolunteering@gmail.com
